  • Will Van Vactor - Oregon Real Estate and Land Use Attorney

    About Will Van Vactor

Will Van Vactor has practiced law in Oregon for almost a decade. From working for a Portland-based firm with a satellite office in Prineville to working at a small local firm in Bend, Will has experience serving clients throughout Central Oregon.

Will focuses on land use because of the unique intersection of policy and law. Oregon's progressive land use system has led to the preservation of valuable resources across the state, but it also poses challenges for property owners and developers. It can also create problems for neighboring property owners with concerns about new development next door. Will is passionate about finding solutions to these challenging problems.

Will understands the importance of helping clients identify their needs and advocating on behalf of his clients' positions. He became a lawyer because he wanted to help people. When a client hires him, Will takes his job as their lawyer seriously and will work tirelessly to help his clients accomplish their goals.

    Firm Values: Van Vactor Law

Client Service: Will puts his clients first. Many people dread hiring a lawyer. It doesn't need to be that way. By giving instant access to case information through a client portal, being responsive to client questions and concerns, collaborating with his clients, and using technology to connect and provide legal services, Will seeks to provide a positive client experience.

Sustainability: Will's practice relies heavily on cloud computing. Cloud computing saves energy, materials, time, and waste. From its inception, Van Vactor Law LLC made a commitment to being paperless. This cuts down on storage fees, reduces material requirements, and increases efficiency and convenience.

Community Involvement: Will values community involvement. In the past, Will has volunteered as a planning commissioner in both Redmond and Prineville. He also recently volunteered as a co-facilitator for the Upper Deschutes Advisory Group through Community Solutions of Central Oregon. Currently, Will is the President of the Board of Directors for Community Solutions of Central Oregon, a nonprofit mediation center based in Bend.

    What is "Virtual" Law?

Virtual law is often defined as the online delivery of legal services. Van Vactor Law LLC uses a secure portal that both the client and attorney can access anywhere there is an internet connection. While Will puts a lot of value on in-person meetings with clients (and encourages such meetings), to increase convenience and to keep client fees and firm costs low, Van Vactor Law strives to operate a "mostly" virtual law firm.

The choice to establish a virtual law practice was easy. This model lets Will better serve his clients by using technology to connect with clients in ways previously unimagined in the legal industry. Virtual law is more convenient for you and the attorney. It also lets him avoid significant expenses, like a brick and mortar office. This means lower fees for you, the client.

Although some people may think "virtual" means "not real", in this case, that is not true. Will is a real attorney and provides real legal services.

    What are Unbundled Legal Services?

Unbundled legal services are limited scope legal services. In other words, the attorney and client agree in advance the attorney will only complete a limited task or list of tasks. Examples include:

    • Document review
    • Legal research
    • Ghostwriting
    • Coaching (rehearsing in advance of a land use hearing, preparing for mediation, etc.)
    • Drafting (land use applications, deeds, etc.)

For a couple reasons, this type of representation can be particularly beneficial if you are on a budget. First, in many cases, since the representation is limited, Van Vactor Law LLC can agree in advance to a fixed fee (this lets you budget and avoid surprise bills). You can also pick and choose what services you pay for from Van Vactor Law LLC. For example, if you are developing a piece of property and are confident you can complete the land use application, but you are unsure about the land use hearing, you can hire Will to coach you up for the hearing (but not have to pay him to prepare for and attend the hearing).

There are many examples of how unbundled legal services can be applied. If you have questions about whether unbundled services are right for you, please contact Will.
