Bend, OR, November 15, 2016– Fourth generation Eastern Oregon attorney, Will Van Vactor, is opening a new law firm Van Vactor Law LLC. To make legal services more affordable, Van Vactor is forgoing the traditional brick and mortar office, and is instead using technology to provide legal services to clients.

Van Vactor’s business model is similar to the non-traditional delivery of legal services called “virtual law practice.” When asked “Why virtual law?” Will said:

"When deciding between opening a brick and mortar office or going virtual, the answer was obvious. By opening a virtual office, I save thousands of dollars in overhead by avoiding unnecessary expenses such as a lease on an office space. Savings are then passed directly onto my clients because my attorney fees are well below Oregon market rates. Just as important to my decision to open an online practice, is that with today’s technology there is no drop off in client service. In fact, I think I can provide better client service with technology than I could at my old brick and mortar office."

Van Vactor notes that the definition of “virtual law” varies, but in short it is the online delivery of legal services using secure methods. He points out that a virtual law practice is very different from online companies that automatically generate contracts and other legal documents without an attorney providing legal advice. Unlike those companies, Van Vactor provides real legal services and real legal advice.

While his practice will not be 100% virtual, in part because he believes face-to-face meetings are important, to save his clients’ money and to improve efficiency, he intends to adopt many features associated with virtual law. According to Will, each client is provided a secure client portal that allows the client to get case updates, conveniently review documents, communicate directly with him, and review and pay bills online.

Van Vactor’s focus is on land use and real estate matters, including subdivisions, zoning, and real estate transactions. He also provides mediation services.

In 2007, Van Vactor began his career working at Miller Nash LLP in its Bend and Prineville offices as a real estate, land use, and trial attorney. More recently he worked at Merrill O’Sullivan LLP.
